There are many beautiful attractions within the city of Hartford including the Elizabeth Path Rose Garden. This original two and a half acre rose garden is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and holds over 800 different varieties of roses. The world famous garden is the oldest rose garden in the country that is operated by the city. The park now has 102 acres with over 15,000 rose bushes making it a landmark that is known all over the world. With gardens, walkways, greenhouses, picnic areas, recreation opportunities and even a pond, this park has enough beauty for every visitor to enjoy.

The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center uses the life's work of one courageous woman to inspire change in others. Stowe is the author of the anti-slavery novel, titled "Uncle Tom's Cabin" that came out in 1852. The world never looked at slavery in the same way again and abolitionist movements rose up all around the country. The center preserved Stowe's former home in Hartford and many historic collections surrounding her life and work. Since 1968, visitors have traveled from all over the world to walk in the footsteps of this brave and outspoken woman.

If you have ever read the famous writings of author, Mark Twain, you will not want to miss visiting the Mark Twain House and Museum. Twain lived in this Hartford home from 1874 to1891 and visitors can tour the home and grounds. The National Historic Landmark was Twain's home when he created admired stories, such as "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", among others. The home is a great example of gothic architecture from that era, containing 25 rooms that include a splendid grand hall and Victorian era decorative arts. The museum even includes activities for children, special events and a gift shop.

If you want to see some of the history of the city itself, the Old State House should be your first stop. The Old State House was completed in 1796 and has since been restored to its original condition. Some of the chambers have a Victorian style while others are more from the Colonial Revival era. This state house looks very similar to the town hall in Liverpool, England, but all of the materials are from America. The building holds many exhibits in the interior that highlight the colorful history of Hartford including important events that took place within the city. Visitors can also tour the original rooms in which legislative decisions were made.

After you have seen the historical State House, you should visit the Connecticut State Capitol Building, which is also a National Historic Landmark. The building holds many items that are important to the history of the state such as statues of war heroes and the battle flags that were used in war. Visitors can learn about the legislative process in the state when they tour the chambers and tour the office building. The structure also holds a hall of fame that recognizes the outstanding achievements of state residents who have become distinguished in their professions.
